There is nothing like the ‘turning of the corner’ from Summer to Fall. At the risk of sounding like a word snob, I prefer Autumn, after all is is the season with the Autumnal Equinox. Once again, yesterday, the sun has passed over the equator ushering the Northern Hemisphere toward cooler days, evening fires, sweaters and OKTOBERFEST!

Oktoberfest in Munich Germany is the largest and one of the oldest Volksfest (Folk Festivals) in the world with the first being held in 1810.

What began as a celebration of the wedding of Kronprinz (Crown Prince) Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, became an annual event now attended by millions from around the world. Since 1950 the Munich Oktoberfest is opened with a twelve gun salute and the Mayor of Munich tapping the first keg at 12pm with a hearty O’zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”)

One interesting tidbit about Oktoberfest Munich is they track the number of lost items each year. Of the 4,500 items lost last year, 1,000 are articles of clothing; no doubt the result of the nearly 7 million liters of beer consumed. That’s a bit more than 14 million pints.

This weekend (Oct 23, 24 & 25), we get to celebrate right along with Ludwig & Therese once again right here in Newport, KY! The Newport Oktoberfest is one of the regions most authentic; held in the Munich style sporting many large beer tents with food, music and dancing.

If you enjoy great beer, great food, traditional German music or just ‘people watching’, you’ll want to bust out your lederhosen or your dirndl and make a stop in Newport this weekend.

Hope to see you there!
