Well that statement hit home. Some of the team went to an Organization/Time Management workshop yesterday afternoon in Covington KY and that was one of the little nuggets that come home with us; Clutter is Simply Postponed Decisions. The point was simple, touch it once; file it or through it away, but don’t postpone the decision of either.

Now, if you’ve ever been in our General Manager, Linda’s office, one of the first things you’ll likely notice is practically ZERO clutter and if there’s anything on her desk, it’s a check list. However, the rest of us…not as much. So becoming more efficient and effective is always helpful.

During the workshop, we were given several tools that are simple to implement, harder to master. Here are a few of the takeaways or “aha!” moments for many of us.

  1. Time Blocking – Block out time in your daily, weekly or monthly calendar for those tasks you do repeatedly and do them at the same time each day, week, month. By blocking out this time it gives you the flexibility to say “no” more honestly because the time is already allocated for something else. That other stuff may be fishing, but it’s allocated nonetheless.
  2. Set aside “interrupters” – You’ll see this, especially in young people, all around you; phone buzzes or beeps and then like Pavlov’s dog the phone is IMMEDIATELY checked. Turn off the ringer and turn it upside down for the 25 minutes you should be working on a project or writing. Don’t be a slave to your technology, let it work for you.
  3. The Mind Dump – When we allow things to clutter our mind, it takes brain power to hold it, so don’t. Take the time at the beginning of the day or task and empty your mind by writing down everything that’s taking up space on your “hard drive.”

These three are just the tip of the iceberg we ran into yesterday, but it was a positive jolt and we hope these help you as they have us!
